The Folk Poetry of the Brazilian Nordeste
The 3rd volume of Nordeste music, this album is devoted, once again, to improvised folk music. Two major genres are presented here: the «aboio», or cowman’s song, and the «embolada», a vocal joust between two singers accompanying themselves on the tambourine. The aboio was originally a song used by cowmen to gather their herds, a serious song meant to inspire respect, sung in head voice, high-pitched and prolonged. The embolada is a living tradition descending from the Portuguese «sung challenge», a confrontation between two «repentistas» who improvise on set forms, singing about the daily life and folk humour. Lyrics and translation included in the liner notes.
