Depuis 2001, deux groupes se sont réunis pour revisiter les musiques du Sud de l'Iran, nées d'échanges culturels immémoriaux entre l'Afrique orientale, l'Arabie et la Perse. D'un côté, l'Ensemble Shanbehzadeh: Saeid et Naghib Shanbehzadeh, Habib Meftaboushehri, trois musiciens iraniens de la province de Boushehr célébrant la tradition pour faire valoir la liberté des peuples à exprimer leur culture. Ils sillonnent le monde, sans cesse acclamés par leurs publics iraniens où qu'ils aillent. Maintes fois réprimés par le pouvoir en place en Iran, ils se sont fait porteurs d'une culture interdite et n'ont plus droit de cité dans leur pays. De l'autre, Matthieu Donarier, Manu Codjia et Joe Quitzke: trois musiciens de jazz français parmi les plus actifs, audacieux et inventifs. Au devant de la scène actuelle depuis la création du trio en 1999, ils collaborent tous trois avec les plus grands (Dave Liebman, Pat Metheny, Daniel Humair, Michel Portal, Tony Malaby,...) tout en construisant patiemment, de leur côté, la musique libre et européenne de ce siècle nouveau. Le résultat est détonant. On découvre un art traditionnel d'une richesse inouïe, tout à coup inclus dans une actualité sonore qui sert la tradition en la magnifiant. Ici, point de "fusion" nivelant les particularités, ni de "world music" édulcorée. L'Ensemble Shanbehzadeh porte son art au plus haut en jouant cette musique aujourd'hui. Le Trio de Matthieu Donarier, en intégrant les codes stylistiques d'une culture lointaine, ose arrangements et improvisations et évolue librement dans cette poésie si riche des musiques de Boushehr.
Since 2001, two groups have been working together at revisiting the music of Southern Iran, which itself stems from age-old cultural exchanges between Eastern Africa, Arabia and Persia. One is the Shanbehzadeh Ensemble – Saeid and Naghib Shanbehzadeh, Habib Meftaboushehri – three Iranian musicians from the province of Bushehr, celebrating tradition and championing the right for peoples to express their culture. They have toured the world, always acclaimed by Iranian audiences, wherever they go. Often repressed by the present Iranian government, they convey a now-forbidden culture and are banned from their own country. As for Matthieu Donarier, Manu Codjia and Joe Quitzke, they are amongst the most active, daring and inventive musicians on the French jazz scene. Since the trio was created in 1999, they have performed with the greatest jazz musicians (Dave Liebman, Pat Metheny, Daniel Humair, Michel Portal, Tony Malaby etc.), at the same time patiently elaborating the free music style of Europe in the new century. The result is flabbergasting. We thus discover a traditional art of extraordinary richness, suddenly included in modern sounds that both serves and enhances it. This is no “fusion” music levelling specificities, no watered down “world music”. Excellence has been achieved by the Shanbehzadeh Ensemble. As for the Matthieu Donarier trio, having integrated the stylistic codes of a distant culture, they have dared new arrangements and improvisation, freely sailing on the rich poetry of Bushehr music.
