Pablo Cueco and Patricio Villarroel, to speak like the Messiaen of
Chronochromie, are among those musiciens who colour time. For rythm is
not only a question of organising durations, it is the colour of time -
born from violence and speed or tenderness of attacks, whether you dive
into weird somptuous reminiscences of the Rite of Spring (From Igor) or
let yourself go into the roving moods of Yvec Tales and Mademoiselle.
It is colour when it drapes itself in the voluptuous acid harmony of
Carla Bley, to paint the cat's eyes (Olhos de Gato). It colours itself
- and in such a subtle way - in the very refined Cnss Cross dialogue -
right hand piano, lett hand piano, zarb.
Stravinsky, Carly Bley,
Monk: one has the masters and references one deserves ! And not every
one can colour time: to evoke the Rite orchestra and worse,
unfaithfully turn it round to make people dream of another, to
rediscover Monk and Bley's pianissimo and fortissimo deep touch and
smelt it without confusing it with the strange, foreign, winged tones
of Cueco's zarb: this comes from a pianist, not only a musician.
To
moult, move, change the colour of the seven beats of an obstinate
melody (The Seven) for the execution, on zarb, of rythmic variations,
this comes from a musician, not only a virtuoso.
What remains to
be said is the joy and the dance, moving foundations of this suite of
rejoicing music pieces, which join to put an end to it (El bandido) in
a vibrating signature.
