Ce sont cinq amis, cinq musiciens unis comme les cinq doigts d’une main de virtuose qui jouerait une musique sans frontières, sans limites, la musique klezmer, la musique des communautés juives (les shtetels) de l’Europe de l’Est, Ils perpétuent la tradition du “peuple errant”, imprégnée de tous les rythmes du monde, tous les modes, toutes les mélodies rencontrés sur sa route. “Yankele” veut dire “Petit Jacques” en yiddish, mais grand est leur art. Venus d’horizons très différents, classique, jazz, chanson, bossa nova, ils unissent leur talent et leurs instruments - et s’amusent même à donner de la voix - pour épanouir leur créativité. Dans ce nouvel opus, ils nous emmènent dans un voyage entre Paris et les origines du klezmer, dans une conjugaison de saveurs (valse française, air tzigane, berceuse israélienne et tant d’autres), avec tendresse, avec humour et générosité.
These five musicians are like the fingers of a virtuoso’s hand playing music without borders, without limits… Klezmer music, from the shtetels of Eastern Europe. They perpetuate the tradition of the “wandering people”, immersed in all the rhythms, melodies and modes encountered along the way. “Yankele” means “little-John”, yet their art is grand. Coming from very different horizons —classical, jazz, chanson, bossa-nova— the musicians unite their talent, their instruments and even their voices to expand their creativity. They take us on a journey between Paris and the origins of Klezmer music, blending French waltzes, Gypsy songs, Israeli lullabies and many more with tenderness, humour, and generosity.

A l’instar de ses voisins du Maghreb, Algérie et Maroc, plus étendus et plus peuplés, la Tunisie détient un riche patrimoine musical. Né Issirène Rozia à Tunis en 1884, Cheikh El Afrite (« le Diablotin ») fut l’un des plus brillants représentants de l’une des plus fastes périodes de l’histoire musicale de la Tunisie. Sa voix extraordinaire a chanté la diversité des styles de cette grande époque : malouf, zajal hilalien, fondo, fezzani et tripolitain. Disparu en 1939, Cheikh El Afrite avait à son actif plus de quatre cents chansons. Ce disque présente le meilleur de son œuvre.
Like its Maghreb neighbours, Algeria and Morocco, both larger and more populated, Tunisia has a very rich musical heritage.
Born in Tunis in 1884, Issirene Rozia, aka Cheikh El Afrite (‘the little devil’) was a brilliant representative of one the most splendid periods in the history of Tunisian music. His amazing voice excelled in the various style of that great epoch : malouf, zajal, hilalian, fondo, fezzani and tripolitan. Cheickh El Aftite, who passed away in 1939, had a repertoire of over four hundred songs. This collection presents the best of his work.

La suite musicale qu’elle nous propose aujourd’hui, en compagnie de Christophe Saunière, virtuose de la harpe, est consacrée à un conte inspiré par les trois menhirs de Machrie, sur la côte Ouest de l’île, figurant les trois sœurs pétrifiées de la légende.
Charme des compositions, talent de l’interprétation, tout concourt a faire de ce voyage dans l’univers doux et farouche à la fois de la tradition écossaise un moment de poésie rare.

Depuis ses débuts, Le Tigre (des Platanes) a été porté sur le voyage, à l’image de l’insecte dont il tire son nom, insecticule assez minable importé par accident d’Amérique du Nord au début des années 1970 et qui dévore les arbres à petit feu. La musique de ce quartet toulousain acoustique et vénéneux met le doigt sur les notions de métissage, d’importation, de brassage culturel, de réappropriation, le tout dans un désordre hautement revendiqué.
En 2001 Le Tigre découvre les Ethiopiques et inclut dans son répertoire éclectique quelques morceaux choisis qu’il interprète à sa façon. Lors d’un voyage à Addis Abeba, leur envie de jouer et de se confronter à des musiciens éthiopiens les mène à rencontrer Eténèsh Wassié, chanteuse à la voix éraillée, petite sœur abyssine de Piaf et Billie Holiday. Ce défi va se jouer sur la base des magnifiques standards éthiopiens : explorer réellement en toute réciprocité, les territoires nouveaux qui s’offrent aux cinq musiciens, un monde fait de la vraie somme de leurs personnalités. De nombreux concerts sont prévus en 2008.
From the very start, Le Tigre (des Platanes) showed a penchant for travel. The group is named after the sycamore lace bug (Corythucha ciliata), the nasty little tree-killing insect that was imported to Europe by accident from North America in the early 1970s. In the spirit of its namesake, the Toulouse quartet is all about crossing borders, import, export, invasion, retreat — the whole messy cultural melting pot, stirred up in a decidedly, and deliberately, disorderly way.
In 2001, Le Tigre des Platanes discovered the Ethiopiques series. They worked some choice morsels, reinterpreted in their unique style, into their eclectic repertoire. In 2006, Francis Falceto, editor of the Ethiopiques series, invited the quartet to the International festival of Ethiopian music in Addis Ababa. The group came back from Addis full of a new energy, inspired by the journey and the encounters. Their repertoire of Ethiopian pieces grew and generated a new artistic leap, setting the scene for them to collaborate, this time “for real”, with Ethiopian musicians who were prepare to mix it up with them. In 2007, the great azmari songstress Eténèsh Wassié took up the challenge…

Comme à l’accoutumée, le talentueux accordéoniste et chanteur Robert Santiago revisite le chatoyant répertoire populaire de l’Amérique Latine: Vénézuela, Mexique, Panama, Colombie, Haïti, Brésil, Saint Domingue, Pérou…Chansons enjouées, orchestrations torrides, dépaysement garanti…
« J’ai choisi le titre « Panamericana » en fonction du caractère « panaméricain » du répertoire, c’est à dire inspiré des cultures musicales de tout le sous-continent, sur lequel je travaille depuis les années 1970. Mais c’est aussi un jeu de mot qui fait référence à la Panaméricaine, la route qui traverse le continent du Nord au Sud, et qu’empruntent chaque jour des millions de personnes qui ont toutes l’espagnol comme langue commune en Amérique latine. C’est aux abords de la « Pana », comme on dit là-bas, que j’ai aussi fait mes plus belles rencontres musicales » (Robert Santiago)
As usual, the talented accordionist and singer Robert Santiago revisits the sparkling repertoire of Latin America: Venezuela, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Haiti, Brazil, Santo Domingo and Peru, with cheerful songs and torrid arrangements enhancing the change of scene.
“I have chosen to call this album « Panamericana » because its repertoire, on which I have worked since the 70s, draws its inspiration from the musical cultures of the whole Latin continent. Panamericana also evokes the road that crosses South America from north to south, a road used by millions of people every day, all of whom have the Spanish language in common. Furthermore, some of my most beautiful musical encounters have taken place around the “Pana”, as people call it over there.” Robert Santiago.

Collection Ethiosonic : le groove éthiopien d’aujourd’hui, sous toutes ses formes et d’où qu’il vienne….
La rencontre de The Ex, le mythique combo punk-rock hollandais et de Gétatchèw Mékurya, le légendaire saxophoniste éthiopien a donné lieu, hormis le disque paru chez Terp Records, à plusieurs concerts, dont la soirée de clôture du Festival Banlieues Bleues, devant un public plus qu’enthousiaste. Ce film de Stéphane Jourdain est bâti sur des allers et retours entre la concentration du studio et l’énergie de la scène. Les compositions sont quasiment toutes tirées du répertoire traditionnel éthiopien et si The Ex ne parlent pas amharique et Gétatchèw ne comprend que quelques de mots d’anglais, la communication se passe ailleurs, dans l’appréhension sensible des solutions musicales, l’énergie de l’interprétation et l’immédiateté du plaisir de jouer ensemble. Nos compères ont encore donné un concert très remarqué en décembre dernier dans le cadre d’Africolor (93).
The meeting of the mythical Dutch punk-rock band The Ex and the legendary Ethiopian saxophonist Getatchew Mekurya has given rise to a CD (Terp Records) as well as many performances to enthusiastic audiences in various venues and festivals, among them the closing concert of the Banlieues Bleues Festival. This film by Stéphane Jourdain goes back and forth between the concentration of studio rehearsals and the energy of the stage performance. Most compositions come from the Ehtiopian repertoire. While The Ex do not speak Amharic and Getatchew understands only a few words of English, communication flows between them, in the sensitive way they find musical solutions, the energy they put in and the instant pleasure of playing together.
