The Love of Niguns
Music of the world
By denis cuniot
Third recording by the klezmer duo Nano Peylet (of Braztsch fame) on clarinet and jazz musician Denis Cuniot on piano. They perform the Jewish tradition of Central Europa and claim their love of the "niguns", the characteristic melodies of the Yiddish culture. Klezmer music, originating in the 'shtetler', the Jewish villages of Poland, Russia or Rumania, crossed the Atlantic with the immigrants, and thrives in the USA. These sensitive, virtuoso musicians are the worthy heirs of the tradition of itinerant musicians, who were "so poor they could not afford to deprive themselves".
