The Cannie Hour

Music of the world

Joanne McIver (vocals, flutes, tin whistles, bagpipes) and Christophe Saunière (harps, guitars, piano, vocals, percussion) present a new album immersed in the Scottish soul. Its title, “The Cannie Hour”, comes from a song by Robert Burns. Cannie is a Scots word meaning quiet or gentle – a “cannie hour” at the fireside, with a glass of whisky, telling stories and singing “til the wee sma’ hours”. Joanne and Christophe have invited some fantastic guest musicians, notably a string quartet of internationally renowned musicians, named “The Whisky and Pistols String Quartet” for the occasion. Inspiration for the songs came from all sorts of different sources : books, an ancient fairy tale, an emmigrant’s letter home to his parents, a distant Scottish island called St. Kilda, Joanne’s grandparents, a school friend’s fear of ghosts…
