«The art of ancerstor mourning in San Basilio de Palenque»… ‘
This is the first album by the Jolly Ambulances’, the legendary mourners who drink rum and pay tribute to the ancestors, livening up funeral wakes (which can last up to nive days) with bullerengue and chameata. The representatives par excellence of ancestral Palenque music, they belong to the Cabildo Lumbalú, which has existed since colonial times and which gathers the village elders into a kind of brotherhood in charge of burials and everything related to the cult of the dead in Palenque. The young musicians of the band Oriki Tabala have joined up with the Jolly Ambulances, showing that sound-systems can also go with tradition.
