Aboio & Embolada : The Folk Poetry Of The Brazilian Nordeste

Music of the world

The Folk Poetry of the Brazilian Nordeste This album is devoted to improvised folk music. Two major genres are presented here: the «aboio», or cowman’s song, and the «embolada», a vocal joust between two singers accompanying themselves on the tambourine. The aboio was originally a song used by cowmen to gather their herds, a serious song meant to inspire respect, sung in head voice, high-pitched and prolonged. The embolada is a living tradition descending from the Portuguese «sung challenge», a confrontation between two «repentistas» who improvise on set forms, singing about the daily life and folk humour. Lyrics and translation included in the liner notes.
