Dombra From Kazakhstan

Music of the world

From the steppes of Kazakhstan (Central Asia), the "dombra" is a long-necked lute with two ropes. The "kui" ("melody" or "state") is a particular musical form: it is an instrumental piece lasting between one and five minutes because the theme, considered perfect, does not require development. The Karatau school in southern Kazakhstan has developed the relatively free style "shertpe", incorporating improvised forms, emphasizing the expression of inner feelings and the description of a sweet and majestic nature. All the performers presented here are rightly considered masters of the dombra.
